" In her solo exhibition “Botanical Echoes”, Laury Denoyes, a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris, seeks to move beyond the perspective—still present in many Western traditions—of treating nature as a mere backdrop. Instead, she proposes it as a central subject: autonomous, vibrant, and worthy of contemplation. Returning to the neighborhood where she lived during her school's exchange program in Korea, the artist allows colors and seasons to seep into her work, alluding to the sacred bamboo and the ginkgo season.
The pieces emerge from a visual and material exploration of nature in the intimacy of the creative process. From hanji paper, made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree, to the inks crafted by the artist through a meticulous process of artisanal experimentation, using pagoda tree's pods, mushrooms, gardenia fruits, sacred bamboo, oak galls, burnt oak, and pine needles.
Laury Denoyes invites us to an act of deep listening and reverence for what nature offers, to see plants not merely as decorative elements but as organisms that interact with their environment in sophisticated ways. In her compositions, the textures of the paper intertwine with the fluidity of the ink, evoking the harmony and constant transformation of the natural world.
Art is not limited to the finished piece but encompasses the process and the materials that shape it. In this sense, it becomes a testimony to the relationship between humans and nature, where the artist does not seek to exert absolute control over every element but rather accompanies them, engaging in a dialogue that allows them to create their own stories."
파리 보자르 미술 대학 출신 작가, Laury Denoyes는 개인전 “Botanical Echoes”에서 ‘자연’을 중심 주제로 삼았다. 작가는 자연을 단순한 배경으로 취급하는 서양의 유구한 전통적 관점에서 벗어나고자 했다. 작가의 작품에서 자연은 자율적이며 생동감이 넘치고, 사유할 가치가 느껴진다. 한국에서 교환 학생으로 지내며 살았던 동네로 돌아온 작가는 남천과 은행나무가 한창인 때를 떠오르게 하는 색감과 계절을 작품에 녹여 냈다. 전시되는 작품들은 자연에 대한 시각적이고 물질적인 탐구에서 시작해, 자연과 밀접한 창작 과정을 거치며 탄생했다. 뽕나무 속껍질로 만든 한지에 더불어, 치자, 버섯, 오배자, 회화나무 열매, 남천, 참나무 숯, 솔잎을 사용해 세심한 장인 정신을 담아 직접 제작한 천연 잉크까지 다양한 재료를 다뤘다. Laury Denoyes는 본 전시에서 자연이 제공하는 것에 경청하고 경외심을 갖는 행위로 우리를 초대한다. 이는 식물을 단지 장식적 요소로만 보는 것이 아니라, 주변 환경과 정교한 방법으로 소통하는 유기체로서 바라보게 한다. 작가가 만들어 낸 구도 속에서 종이의 질감은 잉크의 유체성과 밀접하게 얽히며 자연계의 조화와 끊임없는 변화를 떠올리게 한다. 예술은 완성된 작업물로만 한정되는 것이 아니라 이를 형성하는 과정과 재료까지 포함한다. 이러한 관점에서 예술은 인간과 자연의 관계에 대한 증거가 된다. 작가는 인간과 자연만의 이야기를 만들어 낼 수 있는 대화에 관여함으로써, 모든 요소를 완전히 통제하기보다 오히려 함께 존재하고자 한다.
